To Circle or not to Circle . . .

It's not really the question. We do Circles, we have for thirty years, but Why do we do Circles?

Our services are not for the worship of some deity and/or godform that "requires" worship, or "needs" worship, not in any direct sense anyway. Indeed, it's difficult to imagine providing worship for any deity and/or godform that "requires" worship, or "needs" worship. That seems somehow, I don't know, . . . pathetic, however grandiose and/or melodramatic. (Don't they have their own lives?)

The reason we do Circles is Celebration, and it's not just semantics. The difference is vast, discernable and sweet. The reasons are multifold indeed. We believe each settles their own intent, and intent is of primary importance. But you can pick out some of the major currents. One of the major currents, and the first to emerge in our Tradition, is to Celebrate the various cycles of the Mother, Ḡāēä or whatever anyone may call Her. Whether She is conscious in the way we normally think of consciousness or not, there is a Motherness to this planet. Praise the Goddess; we delight in this Motherness!

The other primary current is Apotheosic, whether union with the Divine or assumption of Divinity. Author Robert A. Heinlein (of Stranger in a Strange Land fame ~1961ce) in his assiduous way might say, "The arrogance of the Universe asserting itself," or more to the point, in his conjugation of Godding (proper gerund or not) "To God: I God, Thou Godst, She Gods, He Gods, We God, They God" and so forth. Or as Bucky Fuller might say, (yes Virginia) "God is a Verb." The great secret of all mysteriums shares the idea that people can become more than what they are, that through various types of growth they already are and are able to become more the very substance of Divinity. We are StarStuff; even mainstream science now pretty much goes along with that. Our bodies at least would not be possible without some of the elements which only begin in the hearts of Stars. But like any other "muscle" or system an entity might possess, things atrophy when not used and function better when exercised. Among some of us, plays the belief (in a variety of flavours, Pistachio is a favorite) that experiencing the flavours and types of consciousness experienced in Circle, or at least possible to experience in Circles, is one of the most direct ways to flex those muscles, jump-start those systems, or however we choose to metaphorize it (Where is Dorothy Parker when you need her, or for that matter, the other Dorothy, the one with the unfortunate habit of dropping houses on perfectly respectable Witches, . . . well perhaps it is just as well that she's not around today).

Therefore, we do Circles to Celebrate and to Grow that part of us that is Divine, in order to become more than we are.

Love,
